Airways

Indian Airlines operates scheduled services from Jammu to Delhi -and Srinagar /Leh. Jammu airport is 8 kms. from the city centre. Jet Airways also operates services between Jammu-Delhi and Jammu- Srinagar.

Railways

Jammu Tawi is an important railhead of the Northern Railways serving the Jammu and Kashmir State. The trains operating to/from Jammu are: Malwa Express, Super Fast, Jammu Mail, Jammu Express, Shalimar Express, Sealdah Express, Jhelum Express, Himgiri Express, Himsagar Express, Lohit Express, Sarwodaya Express, Happa Express, Navyug Express, Gorakhpur Express, Barauni Express, Madras Express, Rajdhani Express and Ferozpur Express.

Roadways

Jammu falls on National Highway l-A and is connected by national highway network to all parts of the country. Some important road distances are: Amritsar- 243 kms; Chandigarh- 436 kms; Delhi- 586 kms; Katra- 48 kms; Srinagar- 305 krns; Manali- 428 krns; Patnitop -108 kms; Mansar -62 kms.

Bus Service

Daily bus services operate to and from Jammu to Delhi, Amritsar, Ambala, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Shimla and Manali. Ordinary, Deluxe and Video Coaches are available on all routes. In addition to the J&K State Road Transport Corporation, the following State Road Transport Corporations connect Jammu with various places in North India providing deluxe and ordinary services; Delhi, Haryana, Himachal, Punjab and Chandigarh. All inter-state bus services operate to and from General Bus Stand in Jammu. Super deluxe, deluxe, video coaches and A-class buses to Srinagar operate from the Railway Station. B-class buses to Srinagar leave from the General Bus Stand. J&K SRTC General Bus Stand is 0.5 km from the Tourist Reception Centre. Besides, some travel agencies operate deluxe! video coaches on the main routes.

:::: What To See ::::
Peer Khoh
A cave shrine located on the Circular Road, 3.5 kms. from the heart of the town. There is a Shiva Lingam formed naturally in the cave; neither its antiquity nor its cause is known. And legend has it that the cave leads underground to many other cave shrines and even out of the country.
Ranbireshwar Temple
Located on Shalimar Road near the New Secretariat, and built by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1883 AD, Ranbireshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has one central 'Lingam' measuring seven and a half feet in height (7.5 ft.) and twelve Shiva 'Lingams' of crystal measuring from 15 cms. to 38 cms. and galleries with thousands of Shiva 'Lingams' fixed on stone slabs.
Raghunath Temple
Situated in the heart of the city and surrounded by a group of other temples, this temple dedicated to Lord Raffia is outstanding and unique in northern India. Work on the temple was started by Maharaja Gulab Singh, founder of the Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir in 1835 AD and was completed by his son, Maharaja Ranbir Singh, in 1860 AD. The inner walls of the main temple are covered with gold sheeton'three sides. There are many galleries with lakhs of 'Saligrams'. The surrounding temples are dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses connected with the epic Ramayana.
Ranbir Canal
A small garden along the Ranbir Canal, 2 kms. from the heart of the town, provides a cool picnic spot during the summer. The Canal branches off from the river Chenab at Akhnoor, 32 kms. away. Its water remains ice cold throughout the year. Its banks serve as good viewpoints and walkways.
Bahu Fort
5 kms. situated on a rock face on the left bank of the river Tawi, this is perhaps the oldest fort and edifice in the city. Constructed originally by Raja. Bahulochan over 3,000 years ago, the existing fort was more recently improved and built by the Dogra rulers. There is a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali inside the fort.
Bagh-e-Bahu
5 kms. These extensive gardens, laid around the Bahu Fort provide a pleasant view of the city open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Peer Baba
On the back side of the Civil Airport is famous Dargah of the M4slim saint, Peer Budhan Ali Shah. On Thursdays, Hindu and Sikh devotees vastly outnumber their muslim brethren at the shrine.
Mahamaya Temple and City Forest
On the By-pass Road, behind Bahu Fort. The city forest surrounds the ancient Mahamaya Temple overlooking the river Tawi. A small garden surrounded by acres of woods provides best view of the city .
Mubarak Mandi Palace
The oldest buildings in this Palace complex date to 1824. The architecture is a blend of Rajasthani, Mughal and even Baroque European influences. The most stunning segment is the Sheesh Mahal. The Pink Hall now houses the Dogra Art Museum which has miniature paintings of the various Hill Schools.
Amar Mahal Palace Museum Rarnnagar
Open in Winter: 1000 to 1200 hrs. and 1500 to 1700 hrs. Summer: 1700 to 1900 hrs. Sundays: 1000 to 1200 hrs. Closed: State holidays and Mondays. Exhibits: Pahari paintings, family portraits of rulers of Jammu and Kashmir, a library. Of interest by itself is the building, a former palace designed like a French Chateau, in which the Museum is housed.
Dogra Art Gallery
This is located in the erstwhile Pink Hall of the old Mubarak Mandi Palace Complex. Open in Winter: 10.30 am -4.30 pm. Summer: 8.00 am to 1.30 pm. Fine miniatures of the Jammu and Basohli Schools. Closed on Mondays.
Katra
50 kms. This small town serves as the base camp for visiting the famous shrine of Vaishnodeviji in the Trikuta hilis. The shrine is approachable on foot along a 12 kms. long well laid foot-path. Every year, nearly 4 million pilgrims pass through Katra on their way to Vaishnodevij:i. Af:-commodation is available in Touris1'Bungalows, Yatrika and a number of private hotels, besides pilgrims' 'sarais'.
Kud
103 kms. This popular resort is situated on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, at an altitude of 1738 metres. Accomm0da- tion is available at the Tourist Bungalows of the J&K TDC as well as at several private hotels.
Patnitop
110 kms. This famous hill resort is perched on a beautiful plateau, at an altitude of 2024 metres across which the Jammu-Srinagar highway passes. Enveloped by thickly wooded forests, Patnitop offers beautiful picnic spots, peaceful walks and breathtaking views of the mountainscape of the Chenab basin. In winter, the resort is generally covered with a thick mantle of snow thus providing opportunities for various snow games including skiing. For
Sanasar
129 kms. from Jammu and only 19 kms. from Patnitop, Sanasar is a cup- shaped meadow surrounded by gigantic conifers. A place for a quiet holiday, the meadow has now been developed as a golf course. It also provides opportunities for para- gliding. Accommodation is available in huts, Tourist Bungalow and dormitory of the J&K Tourism Development Corporation.

Batote
125 kms. Situated at an altitude of 1560 metres on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, this resort straddles the forested slopes of th.e Patnitop mountain range, overlooking the spectacular lie of the Chenab gorge. Accommodation is available in huts, Tourist Bungalow and dormitory of the J&K TDC.

Sudh Mahadev
This holy spot near Patnitop is situated at an altitude of 1225 mtrs., about 120 kms. from Jammu. The shrine is visited by pilgrims on the full moon night of 'Sawan' Guly-August) to worship the 'Trishul' (trident) and a mace which is said to belong to Lord Shiva. The Devak stream originates at Sudh Mahadev and disappears among the rocks a few kilometres down stream. Accommodation: Pilgrims Sarai of J&K TDC.

Gauri Kund
Short of Sudh Mahadev is the legendary spring where the Goddess Parvati used to bath before commencing Her daily prayers at Sudh Mahadev. This spring came to be named after Her as 'Gauri Kund'.

Mantalai
Situated a few kilometres further away from Sudh Mahadev, Mantalai is surrounded by lush deodar forests, at an altitude of over 2000 jmeters. It is belived that Lord Shiva had got married to the Goddess Parvati here.
Mansar Lake
62 kms. A beautiful lake fringed by forest-covered hills. Boating facilities are available on the spot. Every year around Baisakhi, a food and crafts festival is organised here by J&K Tourism. Accommodation: Tourist Bungalow and huts of J&K TDC.
Surinsar Lake
42 kms. It is a picturesque spot with a lake surrounded by wooded hills. Accommodation is available in J&K TDC Bungalow.
Shiv Khori
100 kms. This holy cave, nearly a kilometre long with a 4-feet high naturally fonned Shivling, is considered second only to the shrine of Vaishnodeviji. A major festival is held here on Shivratri day.
Dera Baba Banda
75 kms. It is a major Hindu-Sikh pilgrimage centre. Baba Banda i Bairaagi was Guru Gobind Singh's favourite 'Saint-soldier', who had the Gurudwara constructed on the banks of river Chenab, where he spent his last days.
Purmandal
40 kms. Just off the National highway leading towards Pathankot is the Purmandal Temple Complex built on the banks of the sacred, mostly underground river Devak. Often referred to as 'Chhota Kashi', its main temple is dedicated to 'Umapati', while the other temples worship Lord Shiva. These ancient temples are associated with Shaivites of the Kashmir Valley. Krimchi
On the way to Sudhmahadev- Mantalai, a short detour takes one to Krimchi, site of three of the oldest temples of Jammu. The architecture of the temple shows distinct Greek (Hellenic) influences. Pancheri, a hill resort is a short distance away from here.
Jajjar Kotli
35 kms. On the National highway leading towards Srinagar is the Jajjar Kotli Tourist Complex, built on the banks of the Jajjar rivulet. The crystal clear, cool water of Jajjar attract picnickers in large numbers during summer. A Tourist Cafeteria, a Bar and a small Tourist Bungalow are the facilities provided here by JKTDC.
Akhnoor
32 kms. to the West of Jammu situated on the banks of the mighty Chenab river,is the historic town of Akhnoor. This town is associated with the legend of Soni-Mahiwal. Ruins of the Indus-Valley civilization are to be seen along the river bank commanding a panoromic view all around.
Salal Dam and Lake
95 kms. from J ammu to the west of the Holy Shrine of Vaishnodeviji is the Salal Dam and Lake. With an installed capacity of 400 mw of electricity, this is the largest Hydroelectric Project commissioned in the state so far. The lake formed behind the Dam is 33 kms. long. The Dam site can be visited with the permission of the Project .Authorities.
Baba Dhansar
65 kms. from Jammu, on way to Salal Dam, Baba Dhansar is a beautiful and cool picnic spot. Here, a huge spring gushes out of the mountainside in a thick grove of trees and forms a number of small water-falls before flowing into the Holy Banganga. Next to the spring in a small grove in the rock face is a naturally formed Shiv- ling on which droplets of water fall naturally all the year round. A big mela is held here during Shivratri.
